With US size J / 6.0 mm hook:
14 sc x 16 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm in single crochet, blocked.
One completed granny square (after Round 5) = 5.5 inches / 14 cm x 5.5 inches / 14 cm, blocked.
I cannot stress this enough. Gauge matters for garments. A difference of even half a stitch per inch will throw off your entire dress. Swatch before starting, adjust your hook size if needed, and block your swatch before measuring.

Granny Cluster
This is the building block of your squares.
1. Yarn over, insert hook into designated space
2. Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
3. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times in the same space (4 loops on hook)
5. Yarn over, pull through all 4 loops on hook
This is essentially a dc3tog worked into one space. In the pattern, I call this simply "cluster."
Standing Single Crochet
This technique lets you join new colors without a messy slip stitch start.
1. Make a slip knot with new yarn and place on hook
2. Insert hook into designated stitch or space
3. Yarn over, pull up a loop
4. Yarn over, pull through both loops on hook
Flat Join
This creates an almost invisible seam when joining squares.
1. Hold two squares with wrong sides facing each other (right sides out)
2. Insert hook through the back loop only of the stitch on the front square, then through the front loop only of the corresponding stitch on the back square
3. Work a sl st through both loops together

Important Pattern Notes Before You Begin
1. The dress front is not worked in the round. The two front panels are worked flat. The back is worked flat. All three panels are joined at the side seams.
2. Make all 10 granny squares first, then join them, then construct the body around them.
3. Color sequence for each square: Rounds 1 and 2 in Color E (teal). Round 3 in Color C (medium aqua). Round 4 in Color D (light aqua). Round 5 in Color B (navy blue). Round 6 in Color A (off-white).
4. For single crochet sections, ch 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch.

Continue around all 4 sides. Sl st to first sc to join. Fasten off Color A.
Stitch count check: Each side has 13 sc between corner points. Total: (68 sc, 4 ch-1 corner points)
Block all 10 squares to 5.5 inches / 14 cm x 5.5 inches / 14 cm before proceeding.
Part Two: Joining Squares into Front Panels
Create two identical panels, each with 5 squares stacked vertically.
Use the Flat Join method. Join along the top/bottom edges only.
For each panel, place Square 1 (top) and Square 2 with wrong sides together. Work Flat Join sl sts across the shared edge. This join line should be 13 sl sts between the two corner points. Fasten off.
Join Square 2 to Square 3, then Square 3 to Square 4, then Square 4 to Square 5.
Each completed panel should measure approximately 5.5 inches wide x 27.5 inches tall / 14 cm x 70 cm.
Part Three: Front Panel Side Edging
With Color A and J hook, join yarn at the top corner of one long edge of Left Front Panel. Ch 1, sc evenly down the entire length of the panel. You should pick up 68 sc along each long edge. Fasten off.
Repeat on the other long edge. Repeat both long edges on Right Front Panel.
Each long edge now has 68 sc for joining to the body.
Part Four: Back Panel
The back is worked flat in single crochet.
