Sunshine Yellow Duck Baby Romper Set Free Crochet Pattern

Last spring, my best friend called me in a panic. Her sister’s baby shower was in three weeks, and she wanted to give something handmade. Something special. Something that would make every person at that party gasp when the wrapping paper came off.

Sunshine Yellow Duck Baby Romper Set Free Crochet Pattern

I told her I had just the thing. This little duck romper set had been living in my head for months, and her call gave me the push to finally put hook to yarn. The finished set arrived at the shower with two days to spare, and yes, there were actual gasps.

Now I’m sharing this pattern with you because every baby deserves to look like the cutest duckling at the pond. Fair warning: this project takes some time and patience. But if you can single crochet and you’re willing to learn a few new techniques, you absolutely can make this.

What You’re Making

This pattern creates a complete three piece layette set. You get a bibbed romper with an adorable duck face applique on the front, a matching beanie hat with its own little duck face and topknot, and a pair of booties with tiny duck faces on the toes. Everything is worked in cheerful yellow yarn with orange accents for the beaks and small details.

The romper uses a flat front bib construction attached to a seamless lower body. The legs have ribbed hems that give them a polished, finished look. Button fastened straps cross over the shoulders and attach at the front bib corners. The whole set coordinates beautifully and makes an unforgettable baby gift.

Skill level: Intermediate. You should be comfortable working in the round, creating ribbing with back loop only stitches, basic shaping with increases and decreases, and sewing pieces together. If you’re a confident beginner who has tackled a few projects beyond simple scarves, you can absolutely do this with patience.

Time estimate: Plan for 10 to 14 hours for the romper, 2 to 3 hours for the hat, and 3 to 4 hours for the booties. The complete set takes approximately 15 to 21 hours total.

Finished Measurements

Romper (newborn to 3 months):

  • Chest circumference: approximately 16 inches or 40.5 cm
  • Total length from top of bib to bottom of leg hem: approximately 14 inches or 35.5 cm
  • Bib width: approximately 6 inches or 15 cm
  • Bib height: approximately 6 inches or 15 cm
  • Lower body circumference: approximately 16 inches or 40.5 cm
  • Leg length including hem: approximately 4 inches or 10 cm
  • Hat: fits head circumference approximately 14 inches or 35.5 cm (newborn)

    Booties: sole length approximately 3.5 inches or 9 cm (newborn)

    Materials You’ll Need

    Yarn: Approximately 300 yards or 275 meters of worsted weight yarn (weight 4) in your main color yellow. You’ll also need small amounts of orange for the beaks and wing details, plus white if you want to add any highlights.

    Hook: US size G-6 or 4 mm crochet hook

    Notions:

  • 4 brown or rust colored round buttons, 3/4 inch or 18 mm diameter (2 for romper straps, plus optional ones for booties)
  • 6 black safety eyes, 9 mm size (2 for romper applique, 2 for hat, 2 for booties). If making this for a baby under 36 months, use black embroidery floss instead and embroider the eyes for safety.
  • Yarn needle for seaming and weaving in ends
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Fiberfill stuffing or a cardboard circle for blocking the applique (optional)
  • Yarn Suggestions

    Option 1: Lion Brand Pound of Love in Buttercup. This 100 percent acrylic worsted weight yarn is machine washable, soft against baby skin, and easy to find. It produces an even fabric that shows stitch texture beautifully.

    Option 2: Paintbox Yarns Simply DK held double. When you hold two strands of DK weight together, you achieve worsted weight gauge with a slightly softer, more drapey fabric.

    Option 3: Drops Baby Merino held double, or any sport weight yarn held double, creates a softer hand suitable for sensitive newborn skin.

    Any smooth worsted weight yarn that achieves gauge will work. Avoid fuzzy or textured yarns that hide stitch definition. Choose machine washable yarn for practical baby clothing care.

    Gauge

    18 single crochet stitches by 22 rows equals 4 inches or 10 cm in single crochet worked flat with a US G-6 or 4 mm hook, blocked.

    Please make a gauge swatch. I know, I know. But gauge matters enormously for fitted garments. A difference of even one stitch per inch will affect how the chest fits and how the leg openings work. Make a swatch at least 5 inches square, block it, and measure the center 4 inches before you start.

    Abbreviations and Stitch Definitions

    Let me walk you through every stitch and abbreviation used in this pattern. If you’re newer to crochet, read through this section carefully before starting.

    blo = back loop only. Instead of inserting your hook under both loops of the stitch, insert it under only the back loop. This creates a horizontal ridge and stretchy ribbed fabric.

    ch = chain. Yarn over, pull through the loop on your hook.

    dc = double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops.

    dec = invisible decrease. This is a special decrease technique: insert hook in the front loop only of the next stitch, then insert hook in the front loop only of the following stitch without completing either. Yarn over, pull through both front loops (2 loops remain on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops. This creates a nearly invisible decrease.

    flo = front loop only

    hdc = half double crochet

    inc = increase. Work 2 single crochet stitches in the same stitch.

    MC = main color (yellow)

    CC1 = contrast color 1 (orange)

    rep = repeat

    rnd = round

    RS = right side

    sc = single crochet. Insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops.

    sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (a decrease). Insert hook in next stitch and pull up a loop, insert hook in following stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

    sk = skip

    sl st = slip stitch. Insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook in one motion.

    sp = space

    st(s) = stitch or stitches

    t-ch = turning chain

    WS = wrong side

    yo = yarn over

    Special Techniques

    Ribbing stitch: At the beginning of a ribbing row, chain 1 (this does not count as a stitch). Work one single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across. Turn. When you seam this rectangle into a tube and orient it vertically, you get a stretchy ribbed fabric.

    Magic ring: Make a loop with your yarn so the tail crosses over the working yarn. Insert your hook through the loop from front to back, yarn over with the working yarn, pull up a loop. Chain the required number to begin, then work your stitches into the ring. Pull the tail end firmly to close the center hole. This gives you a tight, clean center for circular pieces.

    Pattern Instructions

    Part One: Romper Bib

    The bib is worked flat in rows of single crochet. It forms a rectangle approximately 6 inches wide by 6 inches tall.

    With MC, chain 28.

    Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (27 sc)

    Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (27 sc)

    Rows 3 through 32: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (27 sc each row)

    After Row 32, your bib measures approximately 6 inches tall. Do not fasten off.

    Checkpoint: Your bib piece should be approximately 6 inches wide and 6 inches tall at this point.

    Bib Top Edge Finishing

    The top edge has two shoulder tabs with a center neck opening. The center 9 stitches form the neck opening drop.

    Row 33 (RS) Left shoulder: Ch 1, sc in first 9 sts. Turn, leaving remaining sts unworked. (9 sc)

    Row 34: Ch 1, sc in each of 9 sts. Turn. (9 sc)

    Fasten off and weave in end. This is the left front shoulder tab.

    Rejoin MC to the 19th stitch from the left edge (10th st from where you left off after Row 33).

    Row 33 Right shoulder: Ch 1, sc in last 9 sts. Turn. (9 sc)

    Row 34: Ch 1, sc in each of 9 sts. Turn. (9 sc)

    Fasten off and weave in end. This is the right front shoulder tab.

    Part Two: Lower Body

    Lower Body Front Panel

    Work continues flat from the bottom edge of the bib downward.

    With RS of bib facing and MC, join yarn to the bottom right corner of the bib. Work 27 sc evenly across the bottom edge of the bib (one sc per stitch in the foundation chain).

    Row 1 (WS): Working into the 27 sc just picked up along the bib bottom, ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Turn. (27 sc)

    Rows 2 through 16: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (27 sc each row)

    After Row 16, the front panel is approximately 3 inches tall below the bib. Do not fasten off. Set aside.

    Lower Body Back Panel

    With MC, chain 28.

    Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (27 sc)

    Rows 2 through 18: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (27 sc each row)

    After Row 18, the back panel is approximately 3.25 inches tall (slightly taller than the front to account for seat shaping).

    Do not fasten off.

    Joining Front and Back Panels

    Hold front and back panels with wrong sides facing together. With MC and yarn needle, whipstitch side edges together along both long vertical edges, matching rows as closely as possible. This creates the main torso tube with the bib attached at the front top edge.

    Turn right side out. The piece should now resemble a tube with the bib folded up at the front.

    Checkpoint: After joining the side seams, your romper body tube should measure approximately 16 inches in circumference (54 stitches around) when measured at the lower opening.

    Leg Opening Shaping

    Rejoin MC at one side seam at the lower edge of the body tube. You will now work in joined rounds across the combined stitch count of both panels.

    Work 1 joined round of sc around the entire lower opening of the body tube. Count of stitches around: 27 sts across front plus 27 sts across back equals 54 sc.

    Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each of 54 sts around, join with sl st to first sc. (54 sc)

    Round 2: Ch 1, sc in first 11 sts, ch 5 (this chain bridges the crotch and creates inner leg separation), sk 5 sts (center front crotch), sc in next 5 sts (center back crotch bridge), ch 5, sk 5 sts (second inner leg), sc in last 28 sts around, join with sl st to first sc.

    Left Leg

    Working around the left leg opening, you have approximately 26 stitches around.

    Rejoin MC at the inner corner of the left leg opening.

    Round 1: Sc evenly around left leg opening picking up 13 sc across front, 5 sc across bridge chain, 8 sc across back, join. (26 sc)

    Rounds 2 through 8: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (26 sc each round)

    After Round 8, the leg tube measures approximately 1.5 inches.

    Left Leg Rib Hem

    The ribbed hem is worked as a separate rectangle, then seamed into a tube and attached to the leg opening.

    With MC, chain 9.

    Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (8 sc)

    Rows 2 through 26: Ch 1, sc blo across. Turn. (8 sc each row)

    After Row 26, you have a ribbed rectangle 26 rows long. Seam the short ends together to form a tube. With yarn needle, whipstitch or sc the ribbing tube to the bottom edge of the leg, matching each rib column to one leg stitch. The right side of the ribbing faces outward.

    Right Leg

    Work identically to the left leg, picking up 26 sts around the right leg opening and working Rounds 1 through 8, then attach an identical ribbed hem tube.

    Part Three: Straps (Make 2)

    Each strap is a long narrow flat strip.

    With MC, chain 6.

    Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (5 sc)

    Rows 2 through 36: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (5 sc each row)

    After Row 36, each strap measures approximately 6.5 inches long and 1 inch wide.

    Fasten off, leaving a 12 inch tail for seaming.

    Buttonhole Row

    On each strap, pick up yarn at one short end (this will be the front end that attaches to the bib).

    Buttonhole row: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sc plus 1 ch-1 sp)

    Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in last 2 sts. (5 sc)

    Fasten off.

    Attaching Straps

    Using the long tail and yarn needle, sew the back end of each strap securely to the top back corners of the back panel. The straps should cross slightly over the shoulders and the buttonhole end should reach the front bib shoulder tabs. Sew buttons to the front bib shoulder tabs at the positions where the buttonholes align. Button straps to bib.

    Assembling the Romper Bib Applique

    Position the face medallion on the center of the bib, centered horizontally and placed approximately 1.5 inches down from the top neck opening.

    Before sewing, attach safety eyes to the face medallion: position them in Round 5, about 7 stitches apart from each other on the upper half of the medallion, then secure firmly.

    Sew the beak to the lower center of the medallion between Rounds 5 and 7, with the wider end up and the pointed tip down.

    Sew the two wing nubs below the bottom edge of the medallion, one on each side of center.

    With tail and yarn needle, whipstitch the entire outer edge of the medallion to the bib using small, even stitches.

    Bootie Duck Face Applique

    Work a mini face medallion stopping at Round 5 (30 sc). Attach safety eyes in Round 3. Sew beak to lower center. Sew completed mini medallion to the toe front of each bootie.

    Finishing Your Duck Baby Set

    Weave in all ends on all pieces using a yarn needle, working the tail through at least 4 to 5 stitches in different directions to prevent unraveling.

    Blocking

    Wet blocking is recommended. Submerge all pieces in cool water and gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Lay flat on a blocking mat or clean towel, shape to finished measurements, pin if needed, and allow to dry completely before assembling. Blocking relaxes the fabric, evens out texture, and helps appliques lie flat.

    Assembly Order

    1. Block all pieces

    2. Attach appliques to romper bib, hat, and booties

    3. Attach straps to romper back and sew on buttons

    4. Weave in any remaining ends after final shaping

    Size Customization Tips

    To increase chest circumference: Add stitches in multiples of 2 to the bib foundation chain and back panel chain. Each 2 additional stitches add approximately 0.44 inches to the width.

    To lengthen the torso: Add additional rows to the lower body front and back panels. Each 2 additional rows add approximately 0.36 inches.

    To lengthen legs: Add additional rounds to the leg tube before working the ribbed hem.

    To resize the hat: Add or subtract one increase round from Rounds 2 through 10. Each round changes circumference by approximately 1.3 inches.

    To resize booties: Add or remove one stitch from each section of the sole Round 1 setup chain. Two additional stitches add approximately 0.44 inches to the sole length.
