Mint Succulent Baby Romper Free Crochet Pattern

This is hands down one of the MOST impressive baby garments you will ever crochet. I mean it. Those 3D succulent rosettes look like they belong in a boutique window, but the construction is way more approachable than you might think. The entire romper comes together in about 8 to 12 hours for an experienced crocheter.

Mint Succulent Baby Romper Free Crochet Pattern

If you have been hunting for a show-stopping baby shower gift or a special outfit for a photo session, this is the one. The combination of granny square construction, layered petal work, and a sweet bloomer bottom creates something truly memorable.

Fair warning: people WILL ask where you bought it. You will get to say you made it yourself. That feeling alone is worth every stitch.

What Makes This Crochet Pattern Special

This baby romper combines several beloved crochet techniques into one stunning garment. The front bodice features nine succulent granny squares arranged in a 3×3 grid, each with a realistic layered rosette center. The back panel keeps things simple with clean rows of single crochet. Below the bodice, a rounded bloomer section provides comfort and that adorable bubble silhouette babies look so sweet in.

The color palette uses soft cream as the main color with three shades of green for the succulents. Light mint, medium sage, and dark olive work together to create natural variation, just like real succulents growing in a garden. Each motif uses a slightly different color combination, which prevents the design from looking too uniform or artificial.

The finished romper fits babies 6 to 12 months old, with a chest circumference of approximately 17 inches laid flat and a shoulder to crotch length of about 13 inches. Size customization tips are included at the end if you need to adjust for smaller or larger babies.

Skill Level and Time Estimate

I would call this an intermediate level crochet pattern. You should feel comfortable with granny square construction, working in rounds and rows, seaming pieces together, and following multi-step instructions. The 3D layered petal technique for the succulents is the trickiest part, but I break it down thoroughly.

If you have completed several granny square projects and at least one garment before, you can absolutely tackle this with patience. Beginners who want to stretch their skills can try it too, just give yourself extra time and read through the entire pattern before starting.

Estimated time: 8 to 12 hours total for someone with solid intermediate experience. The nine succulent motifs are the most time-intensive element. Allow extra time for blocking and snap installation at the end.

Materials You Will Need

Yarn

You will need DK weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in four colors:

  • Yarn A (cream/off-white): approximately 350 yards (320 m)
  • Yarn B (light mint green): approximately 60 yards (55 m)
  • Yarn C (medium sage green): approximately 60 yards (55 m)
  • Yarn D (dark olive green): approximately 40 yards (37 m)
  • Recommended Yarn Brands

Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK is my top pick. It has excellent stitch definition, washes beautifully, and the color range includes perfect matches for cream, mint, sage, and olive. The yarn softens with washing, which is ideal for baby skin.

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton is widely available with a smooth, slightly shiny mercerized finish. The color Ecru works perfectly for Yarn A.

Drops Safran has a cotton-polyamide blend that adds just enough stretch and recovery to make fitting easier without compromising the cotton look.

Substitution note: Choose 100% cotton or a cotton-dominant blend for baby wear. Avoid acrylic for the layer closest to skin. Whatever yarn you choose, make sure it achieves the stated gauge.

    Hook and Notions

  • Hook: US size E-4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for seaming and weaving ends
  • 4 gold or brass metal snaps, size 16 (approximately 10 mm)
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Rust-proof pins for blocking
  • Small piece of cardboard or template for blocking motifs
  • Gauge

Getting gauge right is critical for this crochet pattern. The finished dimensions depend on both your single crochet gauge and your blocked motif size.

    Single crochet gauge: 18 stitches x 22 rows = 4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm)

Motif gauge: 1 completed succulent granny square = 3 inches x 3 inches (7.5 cm x 7.5 cm) after blocking

Swatch both before beginning. Do not skip this step. A gauge swatch using just a chain is not reliable. Work actual stitches in pattern.

    Abbreviations and Stitch Definitions

Here are all the abbreviations used in this crochet tutorial, with plain English definitions:

  • ch = chain: wrap yarn over hook and pull through loop
  • sl st = slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through both loops at once
  • sc = single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops
  • hdc = half double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 3 loops
  • dc = double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops
  • tr = treble crochet: yarn over twice, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops three times
  • sp = space
  • ch-sp = chain space
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side
  • rep = repeat

  • sk = skip
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • beg = beginning
  • rem = remaining
  • rnd = round
  • yo = yarn over
  • MC = main color (Yarn A, cream)
  • CC = contrasting color (Yarn B, C, or D as specified)
  • sc2tog = single crochet two together (a decrease)
  • Special Stitches Explained

    Granny Square Corner Cluster

Work (dc, ch 2, dc) all into the same corner chain-2 space. This creates the characteristic corner of each granny square.

    Granny Square Side Cluster

Work 3 dc into the same chain-2 side space. This fills the side of the granny square between corners.

    Picot Edging

Step 1: Work 1 sc into the stitch indicated.

    Step 2: Chain 3.

Step 3: Slip stitch into the first chain made (the chain closest to the hook).

Step 4: The picot is complete. Continue to the next stitch.

This creates a small decorative loop used along the neckline edge.

    Succulent Petals

The succulents use three layers of petals worked from the center outward, with each layer slightly larger than the last.

Layer 1 petals (innermost, smallest): Work (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) all into the same chain-1 space.

Layer 2 petals (middle, medium): Working behind Layer 1 petals, work (sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc) into the chain-2 space.

Layer 3 petals (outermost, largest): Working behind Layers 1 and 2, work (sc, hdc, tr, tr, hdc, sc) into the chain-3 space.

The layering creates the 3D succulent rosette effect. The innermost petals stand upright toward the center while the outermost petals splay flat and wide.

    Crochet Spaghetti Strap

Chain 60, then slip stitch back along every chain to the beginning. Fasten off. This creates a firm, rounded cord approximately 10.5 inches long.

    Motif Color Assignments

Before you start crocheting, plan your nine motifs. Each one uses a center color and an outer petal color:

  • Motif 1: Center Yarn B (light mint) / Outer Yarn C (sage)
  • Motif 2: Center Yarn C (sage) / Outer Yarn B (light mint)
  • Motif 3: Center Yarn B (light mint) / Outer Yarn C (sage)
  • Motif 4: Center Yarn D (olive) / Outer Yarn C (sage)
  • Motif 5: Center Yarn B (light mint) / Outer Yarn D (olive)
  • Motif 6: Center Yarn C (sage) / Outer Yarn D (olive)
  • Motif 7: Center Yarn B (light mint) / Outer Yarn C (sage)
  • Motif 8: Center Yarn D (olive) / Outer Yarn B (light mint)
  • Motif 9: Center Yarn C (sage) / Outer Yarn B (light mint)
  • Step by Step Instructions

Section 1: Succulent Granny Square Motifs (Make 9)

Each motif has two parts: the succulent rosette center and the granny square frame.

    Part A: Succulent Rosette Center

Using your center color yarn (refer to the color assignments above):

    Rnd 1 (foundation ring):

Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a ring. (4 ch ring)

Ch 1, work 8 sc into ring, sl st to first sc to join. (8 sc)

Rnd 2 (Layer 1 petal foundation):

Ch 1, do not turn. Working into each sc: (sc, ch 1) in each of the 8 sts around, sl st to first sc to join. (8 sc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 3 (Layer 1 petals, innermost):

Working into each ch-1 sp: (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) into each of the 8 ch-1 sps, sl st to first sc to join. (8 small petals)

Rnd 4 (Layer 2 petal foundation):

Working behind Rnd 3 petals. Insert hook from front to back between the posts of the Round 2 sc stitches. Join outer petal color yarn. Work (sc, ch 2) in the gap between each of the 8 sc posts of Rnd 2, sl st to first sc to join. (8 sc, 8 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 5 (Layer 2 petals, middle):

Working into each ch-2 sp: (sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc) into each of the 8 ch-2 sps, sl st to first sc to join. (8 medium petals)

Rnd 6 (Layer 3 petal foundation):

Working behind Rnd 5 petals using outer petal color. Ch 5, insert hook into the Rnd 4 sc post, (sc, ch 3) between each of the 8 sc posts of Rnd 4, sl st to first sc to join. (8 sc, 8 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 7 (Layer 3 petals, outermost):

Working into each ch-3 sp: (sc, hdc, tr, tr, hdc, sc) into each of the 8 ch-3 sps, sl st to first sc to join. (8 large petals)

Do not fasten off if continuing directly to the granny square frame with Yarn A. Otherwise fasten off outer petal color and join Yarn A.

Note: The 3 layers of petals splay naturally outward when blocked. The innermost petals stand upright toward the center while the outermost petals splay flat and wide, creating that gorgeous succulent look.

    Part B: Granny Square Frame

Join Yarn A (cream) to any outer petal tip of the rosette (the tr tip of the outermost petal).

    Rnd 8 (anchoring round):

Ch 1. Work 1 sc into each tr tip and 1 sc into the valley between each large petal around, placing 2 sc into every other valley to create corners. Aim to work 32 sc total around the rosette, placing increases to start forming 4 sides. Sl st to first sc to join. (32 sc)

Note: The exact placement of increases will vary based on your tension. The goal is a flat, roughly square shape with 8 sc per side. Adjust by adding or skipping 1 sc as needed.

    Rnd 9 (corner establishment):

Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Work 2 dc into first st (beginning cluster complete). Sk 1 st. (In next st: dc, ch 2, dc) for corner. Sk 1 st. 3 dc in next st. Sk 1 st. Rep (corner, sk 1, 3 dc cluster, sk 1) 3 times more, ending last rep with (dc, ch 2, dc) corner, sl st to top of ch-3 to join. (28 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps)

    Rnd 10:

Sl st into next 2 dc and into corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc). (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1. (3 dc) in next 3-dc cluster space between corners. Ch 1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1. Rep from (3 dc) in side cluster, ch 1, corner all around. Sl st to top of beg ch-3 to join. (36 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 8 ch-1 side sps)

    Rnd 11 (final round):

Sl st into next 2 dc and into corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3. (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same corner sp. Ch 1. (3 dc in next side ch-1 sp, ch 1) twice. Rep corner and 2 side clusters all around. Sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off and weave in ends. (48 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 12 ch-1 side sps)

Blocked dimensions check: Each motif should measure 3 inches x 3 inches after pinning and lightly steaming.

CHECKPOINT 1: You should now have 9 completed succulent granny squares, each measuring 3 x 3 inches after blocking. They should lie flat with no curling.

Section 2: Assembling the Front Panel

    Arrange your 9 squares in a 3 x 3 grid:

  • Row 1 (top row, left to right): Motifs 1, 2, 3
  • Row 2 (middle row): Motifs 4, 5, 6
  • Row 3 (bottom row): Motifs 7, 8, 9
  • Joining: Hold two squares with wrong sides together (so the join ridge shows on the wrong side). Using Yarn A and a yarn needle or crochet hook, sl st through the corresponding outer sts of each square along one edge. Join horizontally first (3 pairs within each row), then join the 3 rows vertically.

Total joined panel: 9 inches wide x 9 inches tall (22.5 cm x 22.5 cm)

After seaming, join Yarn A at any corner of the assembled panel. Work 1 rnd of sc evenly around the entire outer edge, working 3 sc into each outer corner and 1 sc into each dc or seam point along each edge. Sl st to join. Fasten off. (approximately 108 sc around)

CHECKPOINT 2: Your completed front panel should measure approximately 9 inches wide x 9 inches tall. The succulent motifs should face outward.

    Section 3: Back Bodice Panel

    Using Yarn A, ch 42.

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (41 sc)

Rows 2 through 20: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (41 sc per row)

At the end of Row 20, do not turn. The back bodice should measure approximately 9 inches wide x 3.5 inches tall.

CHECKPOINT 3: The back bodice panel should measure 9 inches wide and approximately 3.5 to 4 inches tall. Count 41 stitches across the top edge.

Section 4: Armhole and Shoulder Shaping (Back Bodice)

Row 21 (armhole shaping, right side): Sl st across first 4 sts. Ch 1, sc across to last 4 sts, leave last 4 sts unworked. Ch 1, turn. (33 sc)

Rows 22 through 28: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (33 sc per row)

Row 29 (left shoulder shaping): Sc in first 8 sc only. Ch 1, turn. Leave remaining sts unworked. (8 sc)

Row 30: Sc across. Fasten off. (8 sc)

Rejoin Yarn A at center. Skip center 17 sts (this is the back neck opening). Join yarn at st 26 from the right edge.

Row 29 (right shoulder): Sc in remaining 8 sc. Ch 1, turn. (8 sc)

Row 30: Sc across. Fasten off. (8 sc)

Section 5: Front Bodice Neckline and Armhole Shaping

Join Yarn A at top-left corner of the front panel.

Row 1 of neckline border: Sc evenly across the top edge of the 3 top motifs. (36 sc)

Row 2 (armhole edge shaping): Sl st across first 3 sts for armhole. Sc across to last 3 sts. Leave last 3 sts unworked. (30 sc)

Row 3: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (30 sc)

Rows 4 through 6: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (30 sc per row)

Row 7 (left strap base, right side facing): Sc in first 8 sts. Ch 1, turn. Leave rem sts. (8 sc)

Row 8: Sc across. Fasten off. (8 sc)

Return to remaining stitches. Skip center 14 sts (front neck opening). Join yarn at st 23.

Row 7 (right strap base): Sc in remaining 8 sts. Ch 1, turn. (8 sc)

Row 8: Sc across. Fasten off. (8 sc)

CHECKPOINT 4: Both front and back bodice panels should now have two shoulder/strap attachment tabs, each 8 sts wide.

Section 6: Joining Front and Back Panels at Sides

Hold front panel (RS out) and back panel together. The back panel aligns with the LOWER portion of the front panel. The top portion of the front motif panel extends above the back panel, forming the front bodice yoke.

Using Yarn A and a yarn needle, mattress stitch or sl st the side seams from the lower edge upward. Seam approximately 3.5 inches on each side. Leave the armhole areas open above the seaming.

    Section 7: Straps

Make 2 straps using Yarn A.

    Ch 61.

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off leaving a long tail. (60 sl sts)

The strap should be approximately 10.5 inches long. Attach one strap to the front left strap tab and the back left strap tab. Attach the second strap to the front right strap tab and the back right strap tab. Sew each strap end securely, overlapping approximately 4 rows.

    Section 8: Neckline Picot Edging

Join Yarn A at the right shoulder strap attachment of the front neckline.

Work along the front neckline opening and back neckline opening continuously: Sc into first st, (ch 3, sl st into first ch of ch-3 loop just made), sk 1 st, sc into next st. Rep around entire neckline opening. Sl st to first sc to join. Fasten off.

CHECKPOINT 5: The neckline should have a delicate scalloped picot border that lies flat without puckering.

Section 9: Lower Body (Bloomer Section)

Join Yarn A at the lower right side seam of the joined bodice.

Set-up round: Ch 1. Sc evenly around the entire lower edge of the joined bodice (both front and back). Total sts: approximately 80 sc. Sl st to first sc to join, pm at beginning of round. (80 sc)

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Sl st to first sc to join. (80 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Sl st to join. (80 sc)

Rnd 3 (increase round): Ch 1. (Sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc) rep 8 times. Sl st to join. (88 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc around. Sl st to join. (88 sc)

Rnd 5: Sc around. Sl st to join. (88 sc)

Rnd 6 (increase round): Ch 1. (Sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc) rep 8 times. Sl st to join. (96 sc)

Rnds 7 through 10: Sc around. Sl st to join. (96 sc per round)

Rnd 11 (increase round): Ch 1. (Sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc) rep 8 times. Sl st to join. (104 sc)

Rnds 12 through 14: Sc around. Sl st to join. (104 sc per round)

CHECKPOINT 6: The lower body section should measure approximately 4 to 5 inches in depth and sit wide at the hips.

Section 10: Crotch Shaping and Leg Openings

Place markers at sts 1 and 53, dividing the 104 sc into two sections of 52 sc each.

    Front Bloomer Panel

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first 52 sc. Ch 1, turn. (52 sc)

Rows 2 through 4: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (52 sc)

Row 5 (decrease row): Sc2tog at each end. Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (50 sc)

Row 6: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (50 sc)

Row 7: Sc2tog at each end. Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (48 sc)

Row 8: Sc across. Fasten off.

    Back Bloomer Panel

Rejoin Yarn A at marker. Work flat on back 52 sts.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first 52 sc. Ch 1, turn. (52 sc)

Rows 2 through 4: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (52 sc)

Row 5: Sc2tog at each end. Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (50 sc)

Row 6: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (50 sc)

Row 7: Sc2tog at each end. Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (48 sc)

Row 8: Sc across. Fasten off.

Seam crotch: Align front and back bottom edges (Row 8 of each). Using Yarn A and yarn needle, whip stitch or sl st join the bottom 48 sts of front to 48 sts of back. The remaining open portions at each side form the two leg openings.

    Section 11: Leg Opening Edging

Join Yarn A at the inside of one leg opening at the crotch seam.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the leg opening, working approximately 44 sc around. Sl st to join. (44 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Sl st to join. (44 sc)

Rnd 3 (picot edging): (Sc in next sc, ch 3, sl st into first ch of ch-3 just made, sk 1 sc) rep around. Sl st to join. Fasten off.

    Repeat for second leg opening.

    Section 12: Snap Installation

Sew 4 snaps evenly spaced along the crotch seam line, approximately 1 inch apart. Position snaps approximately 0.5 inches from the crotch edge on both front and back panels so they align when fastened.

    Finishing and Blocking

Pin each succulent motif individually to a foam blocking mat or towel, stretching gently to 3 x 3 inches. Use rust-proof pins. Lightly steam for cotton-dominant yarns. Do not press the iron directly onto the 3D petal layers. Hold the steam iron 1 inch above the surface.

After assembly and before snaps, wet block the entire garment gently. Pin to finished measurements and allow to dry flat. Weave in all ends securely on the wrong side.

    Care Instructions

Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, inside out. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry or wring. Do not iron directly over the 3D succulent petal layers. Store flat or loosely rolled, not on a hanger.

    Size Customization Tips

For size 0 to 3 months: Reduce each granny square to 2.5 x 2.5 inches by stopping after Rnd 10. Use a smaller hook (US D-3 / 3.25 mm). Reduce back bodice chain by 6 sts (ch 36). Reduce lower body set-up round to approximately 70 sc.

For size 12 to 18 months: Add a 4th column of squares to each row, making a 4 x 3 grid (12 squares total). Increase back bodice chain to ch 48. Add 2 additional increase rounds in the lower body section.

For size 18 to 24 months: Use a 4 x 3 grid and increase the hook to US F-5 (3.75 mm), or use worsted weight cotton with an E hook and swatch carefully.
