Last spring, my best friend called me in a panic. Her sister was having a baby in three weeks, and she wanted to give something handmade. Something special. Something that would make the new mom cry happy tears at the shower. I stayed up way too late that night sketching out what became this little layette set.

The bonnet, the tiny cardigan with its satin ribbon bow, the itty bitty booties. When I handed her the finished set wrapped in tissue paper, she actually teared up herself. That is the power of handmade baby gifts, and that is exactly why I am sharing this pattern with you today.
This mint green newborn sweater set has become one of my most requested patterns. It looks intricate and heirloom quality, but I promise the granny cluster stitch creates that beautiful texture almost automatically. If you can work a double crochet, you can absolutely make this set.
What You Are Making
This three piece layette collection includes a front opening cardigan with scalloped edges, a sweet round bonnet with ribbon ties, and matching booties with folded cuffs. Every piece uses the same granny cluster stitch throughout, which creates that gorgeous open, textured mesh you see in the photos. The pale mint color stays consistent across all three pieces with no color changes to worry about.
The cardigan works from the top down in one piece through the yoke, then divides for the body and sleeves. This construction method means minimal seaming at the end. The bonnet starts from a center ring and works outward in rounds. The booties come together in three stages: sole, upper, and cuff.
Skill level: Intermediate. You need comfortable tension control and experience with joining rounds and picking up stitches. If you have made a granny square blanket before, you have the main skill already.
Time estimate: The cardigan takes 6 to 9 hours, the bonnet takes 2 to 3 hours, and the booties take 3 to 4 hours for the pair. Budget about 11 to 16 hours total for the complete set.
Finished Measurements
Cardigan:
Bonnet:
Booties:
This set fits newborn to 0 to 3 months, which means head circumference 13 to 14 inches and chest 14 to 16 inches.
Materials You Will Need
Yarn: Worsted weight (CYC 4), approximately 400 yards / 366 meters total in pale mint or soft seafoam
Some yarn suggestions that work beautifully:
Hooks:
Additional supplies:
Gauge
This is critical for baby garments. Please check your gauge before starting.
Using your H-8 / 5.0 mm hook and worsted weight yarn:
To make a gauge swatch: Chain 16. Work 8 rows of granny cluster stitch. Block lightly. Your swatch should measure approximately 5 in / 12.7 cm wide and 4 in / 10 cm tall. If your swatch is too big, go down a hook size. Too small, go up a hook size.
Abbreviations and Stitch Definitions
Let me walk you through every abbreviation you will see in this pattern:
Special Stitches
Granny Cluster (cl)
This is the star of the show. Every cluster goes into a chain 2 space from the previous row, not into individual stitches.
1. Yarn over, insert hook into the designated ch-2 space
2. Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
3. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops (2 loops remain)
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times in the same ch-2 space (4 loops on hook now)
5. Yarn over, draw through all 4 loops
6. Chain 2 to close the cluster and create the next ch-2 space
That whole sequence is one complete cluster unit. Each cluster takes up about 1.25 inches horizontally.
Scallop Stitch (for edgings)
This pretty edge finishes all the hems and cuffs.
1. Single crochet into any stitch or space
2. Skip 1 stitch or space
3. Work 5 dc into the next stitch or space
4. Skip 1 stitch or space
5. Single crochet into the next stitch or space
6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 around the entire edge
Ribbed Stitch (for bootie cuffs)
Working single crochet in the back loop only creates a stretchy ribbed texture.
1. Chain your starting number
2. Turn, work 1 sc into the second chain from hook and each chain across
3. Chain 1, turn
4. Work 1 sc into the BLO of each sc across
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all remaining rows
Pattern Notes Before You Begin
Read these through. They will save you confusion later.
1. The cardigan works flat from top down in one piece through the yoke, then divides at the underarms.
2. Raglan increases happen every right side row. You will place four markers at the raglan points. On RS rows, work 2 clusters into each marked space instead of 1. This adds 8 increases per RS row total. On WS rows, work even.
3. To turn at the end of flat rows, chain 3 and turn. This ch-3 counts as the edge ch-2 space plus one dc.
4. Stitch counts in parentheses show complete cluster units unless stated otherwise.
5. The bonnet works in joined rounds from center outward. Join each round with a slip stitch.
6. Ribbon threading uses the naturally occurring ch-2 spaces. No special eyelet row needed. Just weave the ribbon through.
7. Weave in ends at least 1.5 inches in multiple directions. The open mesh can let loose ends escape otherwise.

Finishing and Blocking
Weave in all ends in at least two directions for at least 1.5 inches each.
For acrylic yarns: Steam block by holding your iron about 1 inch above the fabric. Let steam penetrate, then gently shape with your hands. Let cool completely.
For wool or natural fibers: Wet block by soaking in cool water for 10 to 15 minutes. Squeeze gently (no wringing), roll in a towel, then pin to blocking mat at finished dimensions. Let dry completely.
Size Customization Tips
To size up to 0 to 3 months: Work 1 additional raglan increase row before dividing for sleeves. Add 3 more rows to the body. Add 1 more round to each sleeve. For the bonnet, work 2 additional even rounds after Round 10.
To size up to 3 to 6 months: Work 2 additional raglan increase rows before dividing. Add 5 rows to the body. Add 2 rounds to each sleeve.
