About This Baby Cardigan Crochet Pattern
This cheerful baby sweater is worked from the top down using raglan construction. That means you start at the neckline and work your way down to the hem in one piece. No seaming the body together at the end. The sleeves are separated partway through and finished in the round, which keeps the whole process smooth and satisfying.
The texture you see in the photos comes from alternating rows of single crochet (sc) and half double crochet (hdc). This creates subtle horizontal ridges without any complicated stitch patterns. If you can work those two basic stitches, you can absolutely make this sweater.
The adorable duck applique is crocheted separately and sewn on after blocking. It adds personality without adding stress to the main construction. Those little orange feet? Surface slip stitches directly onto the sweater. So cute.

With the larger hook (G-6 / 4.00 mm) in the body stitch pattern:
16 stitches and 18 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm after blocking.
Please make a gauge swatch. Chain 22, work the body stitch pattern for 22 rows, block, and measure the center section. Gauge matters for garment fit. One hook size difference changes the chest measurement by about 1.25 inches.

Alternate these two rows throughout the body and yoke.
Raglan Increase Row:
At each of the 4 raglan markers, work: sc in stitch before marker, move marker up, 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next stitch. This adds 8 stitches total per increase row.
Pattern Notes Before You Begin
1. The cardigan is worked flat from the top down. Do not join into a round during yoke construction.
2. Chain 1 at the beginning of every row does NOT count as a stitch.
3. Raglan markers are placed in the chain stitch between each section. Move them up each row.
4. Stitch counts in parentheses show total working stitches, not including turning chains.
5. When dividing for sleeves, place sleeve stitches on scrap yarn holders.

Eye: Embroider a small French knot or satin stitch dot with black yarn.
Feet: Using CC2 and a size F-5 hook, surface slip stitch three short lines radiating from a central point directly on the sweater at the base of where the duck will sit. Make 2 feet, spaced about 0.5 inch apart.
Assembly: Sew head to top of body, overlapping slightly. Sew beak to front of head. Sew assembled duck to lower right front of sweater, about 1 inch above hem.
Finishing
Weave in all ends securely.
Blocking: Soak the sweater in cool water for 20 minutes. Gently press out excess water in a towel. Do not wring. Lay flat on blocking mats, pin to finished measurements, and let dry completely.
Sew buttons to left front band, aligning with buttonholes. Sew through all layers for security.
Sew duck applique in place after blocking.
Size Customization Tips
For 12 to 18 months: Add 2 additional yoke increase rows before dividing for sleeves. Add 2 inches to body length and 0.5 inch to sleeve length.
For 0 to 3 months: Remove 3 yoke increase rows. Reduce body length by 1.5 inches. Reduce sleeve length by 1 inch.
Care Instructions
Hand wash in cool water with gentle soap, or machine wash on delicate in a mesh bag if using superwash or acrylic yarn. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry.
