THIS is the baby shower gift that will have everyone asking where you bought it. I’m not exaggerating. This vintage-inspired romper and bonnet set works up in about 11 to 16 hours total, and the finished result looks like an heirloom piece straight from a boutique window.

The shell stitch creates that gorgeous scalloped texture you see in the photos, but here’s the secret: it’s just five double crochets worked into one spot. That’s it. If you can double crochet, you can absolutely make this set.
I designed this pattern with three sizes built in, from newborn all the way to 12 months. The matching bonnet with its ruffled brim and sweet tassel ties takes the whole set over the top. Whether you’re making this for your own little one or gifting it to a new parent, get ready for some serious compliments.
Pattern Overview and Skill Level
This crochet baby romper pattern sits at an intermediate skill level, but don’t let that scare you off. If you’ve completed a few projects and feel comfortable working in rows, joining seams, and following a stitch pattern, you’re ready for this.
The romper is constructed as two flat panels, a front and a back, that get seamed together at the sides. The shell stitch body gives it that beautiful texture, while a cream waistband stripe adds a sweet vintage touch. Wooden buttons at the crotch make diaper changes easy, and those adorable crocheted bows at the shoulders are simple little rectangles wrapped in the middle.
The bonnet starts at the crown and works outward in rounds, then transitions to rows to create the face opening. A ruffled cream brim frames baby’s face perfectly.
Time estimate: Romper takes 8 to 12 hours. Bonnet adds another 3 to 4 hours. Plan for a weekend project or spread it across several evenings.

Yarn Suggestions
Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in Coral and Cream colorways works beautifully. It’s 100% cotton with 137 yards per 50g ball and holds up well to washing.
Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Peach and Ecru is widely available and gives consistent tension at 186 yards per 100g ball.
Drops Safran in Old Rose and Off White creates that heirloom quality with crisp stitch definition at 175 yards per 50g ball.
Stick with cotton or cotton blends for baby items. Cotton breathes well and washes easily, which matters a lot for infant clothing.
Gauge
Shell stitch pattern: 18 stitches and 10 rows = 4 in / 10 cm (1 shell = 5 dc, worked over a 6-st repeat)
Single crochet: 20 stitches and 22 rows = 4 in / 10 cm
Please swatch before starting. Gauge matters for fit, especially in a garment with button closures.

Shell Stitch
The shell stitch creates that fan-shaped texture throughout the romper body and bonnet. It’s simply 5 double crochets worked into the same stitch or space.
Step 1: Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch or space.
Step 2: Yarn over and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through two loops. Yarn over and draw through two loops. One double crochet made.
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 through 2 four more times into the same stitch or space. Five double crochet made in one location. Shell complete.
Shell Row Setup
Row foundation: ch 1, sc in first st, (sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st) across.
Return row: ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first sc (half-shell at edge), sc in center dc of next shell, (shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell) across to last sc, 3 dc in last sc (half-shell at edge), turn.
Alternating rows: ch 1, sc in first dc (top of half-shell), (shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell) across, sc in top of t-ch, turn.
These three rows form the shell pattern repeat. The half-shells at the edges on the return row keep your side edges straight and even.
Picot Scallop Edging
This creates the beautiful scalloped border at the leg openings and bonnet brim.
Step 1: Join yarn with sl st to any edge stitch.
Step 2: Ch 3, sl st into first ch made (picot made). Sl st into next 2 sts along edge.
Step 3: Repeat step 2 across entire edge.
Small Bow (make 4 for romper)
Foundation rectangle: Ch 11. Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (10 sc) Turn.
Rows 2 through 4: Ch 1, sc across. (10 sc) Fasten off leaving a 12 in / 30 cm tail.
Center wrap: Cut a 10 in / 25 cm length of yarn B. Fold rectangle in half widthwise. Wrap center wrap yarn tightly around the middle of the folded piece three times and tie securely. Adjust loops to form a bow shape. Use tail to sew bow to garment.
Ruffle Edging (bonnet brim)
Rnd 1 (Yarn B): Join with sc, 2 sc in every stitch around edge. Turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st to top of beg ch-3. Turn.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, applying picot scallop edging as above. Fasten off.
Important Pattern Notes
1. The romper is worked in two flat panels. Front and back panels are identical in stitch pattern but the back has a slightly higher armhole.
2. Shell stitch is worked over a multiple of 6 stitches plus 1.
3. Yarn B (cream) is used for the waistband stripe, all edgings, bow centers, bonnet brim ruffle, and bonnet ties.
4. Ch 3 turning chains count as the first dc. Ch 1 turning chains do not count as a stitch.
5. Mark the RS of each panel with a stitch marker when you begin to avoid confusion during assembly.
6. The shell stitch creates a slightly open, lacy fabric. This is intentional for breathability.

Size Customization Tips
To add size: Add one additional 6-stitch shell repeat to the starting chain of each panel. This adds approximately 1.3 in / 3.3 cm to the chest width. To add torso length, work 2 additional rows of shell pattern in the lower body section before beginning the waistband.
To make the bonnet larger: Add one more expansion round after Rnd 9 before working the straight rows. Every additional 1.25 in / 3.2 cm of diameter adds approximately 4 in / 10 cm of head circumference.
To lengthen straps: Add rows in 2-row increments. Approximately 2 additional rows adds about 0.25 in / 6 mm of length.
For premature or small newborn sizing: Reduce starting chain by 6 stitches on each panel and work 2 fewer lower body rows. Shorten straps by 4 rows.
Finishing and Blocking
Weave in all ends securely using yarn needle, running tails through at least 1 in / 2.5 cm of stitches in two directions.
Wet blocking is recommended. Submerge finished pieces in cool water and gently press out excess water without wringing. Lay flat on blocking mat. Shape panels to correct dimensions. Use pins to hold edges straight and leg openings flat. Allow to dry completely, about 12 to 24 hours.
Cotton will relax and stitch definition will improve significantly after blocking. The ruffle brim of the bonnet will open and lay beautifully flat once blocked.
Sew buttons on using sewing needle and coordinating thread, stitching through each button hole at least four times for security. Check button security before each wear.
